Modak (Indian - Dessert) Recipe

A sweet dumpling made with rice flour or wheat flour, stuffed with a sweet filling made of jaggery, coconut, and cardamom. Modak is a popular dessert, especially during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi.
Ingredients:
  • Rice flour - 4.23 oz (1 cup)
  • Water - 12 fl oz (1.5 cup)
  • Jaggery - 8.47 oz (1 cup)
  • Coconut (grated) - 12.68 oz (1.5 cup)
  • Cardamom powder - - (1 tsp)
  • Ghee - 0.56 oz (1 tbsp)
Instructions
  • In a pan, add jaggery and grated coconut and cook over medium heat until the jaggery melts. Stir occasionally.
  • In a steamer, steam the modaks for 10-12 minutes on medium heat.
  • Remove from the steamer and let them cool down. Serve the modaks as a sweet dessert.
  • Add cardamom powder and stir it well. Cook until the mixture thickens and starts to leave the sides of the pan.
  • Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool down.
  • In a separate pan, bring water to a boil and add ghee.
  • Reduce the heat to low and add rice flour. Stir continuously to prevent lumps from forming.
  • Cook until the mixture comes together and forms a dough. Turn off the heat.
  • Knead the dough while still warm. Divide it into small portions and shape them into balls.
  • Take a ball of dough and flatten it into a circle. Place a spoonful of the coconut filling in the center.
  • Pinch the edges of the dough together to form a closed pouch. Repeat the process with the remaining dough and filling.
